TheOutnet £1 sale dress

A year ago, I blogged about the launch of's discounted sister site, Designer clothes at bargain prices? What's not to like? Especially if the website in question is offering thousands of high-end labels for just £1, which is what did on Friday 16th April to celebrate its 1st birthday.

Sound too good to be true? It may have been for some as the start time was secret and within minutes of the sale invitation hitting my inbox at 7.23am, the site was too busy to cope.

To make things fair, you were restricted to one item. My friend Avril snapped up a pair of black silk evening shorts by Phi which were originally £720. And I persevered and managed to bag this Giles dress.

It wasn't smooth sailing though. My size sold out while I was trying to buy it, so I was forced to get the next size down in a frantic attempt to purchase something, anything, for £1. It was frenzied and slightly frustrating, but the thrill of putting my £6.95 payment down (including postage) on what had been a £1,365 dress was amazing.

Sadly, the slip is too small to breathe in, while the dress is too big to flatter (on me anyway). To prevent it from looking like a giant nightie, I've cinched it in with a belt. But the colour doesn't help - so-called nude, it's more of a boudoir blush or bridesmaid-dress peach.

The detail around the hem (below) is beautiful though. Wafer-thin, laser-cut pieces of fabric are stitched on to form a leafy, floral border. It's like a work of art. So, until I buy another slip, it's hanging up on my wall.

  1. I am glad you were one of the lucky few who managed to buy something. I found the whole experience utterly frustrating and disappointing - along with hundreds others, who complained on Twitter, Facebook and Guardian's website. I never managed to even log in, let alone buy something.
Why not stagger the sale? Why not increase capacity? Why not limit the numbers who could register? I am not going to buy anything from Outnet anytime soon.

  2. I agree with Anna... I feel like the Outnet owe me money now after wasting 2 hours of my life! I expected the site would crash, but I'm suprised they didn't expect - and prepare for - this too.
But anyway, I'm happy you managed to score something! It's a really, really great dress, I think a matching waist belt, nude heels and bold pendant of some kind would complement it beautifully!

  3. Fantastic you managed to get something!!
I stayed up all night in case the sale was opened at 4am or something, but only managed to log in before completely stalling with the crashing and slowing etc. Sad sad times :(
Like coco says...surprised they didnt prepare for it! Obviously they knew how many people had registered so they could have surely put measures in place?
Ohh well. Like i said, yay for you getting your hands on an amazing dress!

  4. Congrats, your dress is incredible - a piece to treasure forever. xx

  5. Well done - like everyone else when I got logged on finally everything had sold out!

  6. Ditto ditto ditto everyone else!
Trying to access that sale was the most infuriating thing ever, why they didn't prepare for the mammoth amount of people trying to access the site I do not know...
Well done you for bagging a piece!

  7. It such a shame this dosen't fit :( It is beautiful.... however if its laser cut detaling you are after you should look at the Rare Fashion website. They have some gorgeous pieces at the moment ..... Here is the link XOX
