Bargainista Fashionista's New Look Editor's Picks

It's been an exciting time lately for Bargainista Fashionista. Not only did ASOS ask me to select my top 10 sale picks for its Facebook page, New Look invited me to take part in the Editor's Picks series for its NL Daily blog.

So, click here to see my favourite New Look autumn picks and to read my Q&A. I hope you enjoy it. As for my choices, these are the reasons to buy them…

The dress: Thanks to Miu Miu, you'll be seeing a lot of large floral-print (and bird-print) dresses come autumn/winter. The hyacinth pattern on this tea dress gives a vintage vibe, while the caped back adds a modern edge.

The skirt: Block colour continues into the new season. This skirt embraces autumnal navy and claret. Plus, the belt is a nice detail.

The cape: This 1970s-style cape is a stylish way to cover up. Like my H&M poncho, I think it'll become an essential when an extra layer is needed. It comes in cream, too.

The shirt: Peter Pan collars on tops and dresses are big next season. This elegant blouse with its scalloped edges is a chic way of working the look.

The bag: With faux-leather trim and expensive-looking hardware, this two-tone bag is a classic. I particularly love the ditsy print lining inside. It also comes in a black Miu Miu-esque dandelion pattern.

The ring: This fox ring is so cute and a bargain at £6.99. It reminds me of my favourite Zoe & Morgan foxy knocker necklace.

What pieces take your fancy? Let me know.

What I wore to work

You know when you've got something new that you just can't wait to wear? Well, that was me, yesterday, with my new Michael Kors watch and Whistles lace skirt.

So, here's the details:
Uniqlo cardigan
Gap T-shirt
Whistles skirt
Marks & Spencer Autograph range wedge sandals
Zoe & Morgan, Urban Outfitters and vintage necklaces
Michael Kors watch
H&M belt

See more on the What ELLE Wears blog at

I've been sale-stalking the Whistles skirt for well over a month a now. Those of you that know me will think I've been very restrained not to have snapped it up before now, but the truth is I was hoping it would be reduced further.

But when the last two skirts in my nearest shop (both in my size by sheer luck) went down to one, I knew I had to act or miss out. So, although it wasn't the bargain I was hoping for (£75 from £150), I'm glad I finally got it.

I love the skater style of Lola (as the skirt is named) and the scalloped hemline, which gives a subtle flash of skin. Plus, navy is a refreshing alternative to black lace. A heavy, luxurious fabric, it reminds me of Erdem's lace creations – navy being recently paraded by the Duchess of Cambridge on her tour of Canada.

As for the high waist, a contrasting belt defines it well. I think Lola and I will be sticking together throughout autumn/winter. And, if I want to give her a makeover, I'll swap out the lining for slips in whatever colours take my mood.

Like the sound of Lola? There are a few sizes left on the Whistles website, while ASOS is selling the skirt in tan for £105.

Onto my new pride and joy: my new Michael Kors watch – a ladies chronograph in rose gold from Time² watches.

I've got to confess, watches don't hit my radar much. I rely on my mobile for telling the time. But recently, there's been one timepiece that's made me sit up and notice – this might be due to the number I've clocked (if you'll excuse the pun) in the office of late – namely the Michael Kors chronograph watch.

Gold seems to be the most popular choice but, as it so happens, rose gold was what I ended up liking best (it just suited my skintone better). So, what better excuse for celebrating my 4th wedding anniversary, where the gift is traditionally fruit and flowers? OK, I know 'rose' gold is a tenuous link, but it kind of counts.

Spot the difference

When ASOS asked me to pick my top 10 sale buys for its Facebook page, I trawled through all the reductions to find the best bargains. One of which is this red sheer pleated maxi skirt from Warehouse (above).

It reminds me of the latest Carrie skirt from Whistles (below) which I blogged about recently. Having worked its way through the rainbow from pink to yellow to blue, it's now available in red. So, if Carrie's price tag of £125 is not within your budget, then the Warehouse version is a little more purse-friendly, having been reduced from £60 to £36 in the ASOS sale. Plus, you can get a further 10% off with the code EXTRATEN.

Note, you do get what you pay for and Carrie really is the crème de la crème of the sheer pleated skirt (I may be biased as I own the pink version, but I do think it is superior to most). So be aware of these tiny details: the Warehouse skirt isn't fully lined, so sheer might actually be rather see-through. Plus, a black elasticated waistband at the band of the skirt is in lieu of a zip fastening.

But, if it's that dreamy floatiness of fabric you're after, then both skirts deliver. Indeed, I think the Warehouse skirt may even be longer. And, of course, both are a knock-out colour.

Get an extra 10% off sale prices at ASOS

Have you shopped the ASOS sale for final-clearance bargains yet? This tba silk jumpsuit is a steal at £30, reduced from £150. That's a discount of 80%!

This is a smart choice for getting new-season ready as there will be a lot of this pumpkin colour around come autumn/winter. Whistles, in particular, has got a double-breasted shorts suit in exactly this shade coming soon and you can expect to see lots of orange and mustard as strong colours continue to dominate.

I love the sexy sheer back on this jumpsuit and the back tie-fastening which gives the waistline a little definition. It also comes in a pretty ballerina print, in more muted yellow tones, which is reduced from £150 to £40.

What's more, ASOS is offering 10% off sale prices with the code EXTRATEN. Which takes this tba pumpkin jumpsuit down to £27! I'm not sure how long the code is valid for, but it does says for a limited time only on the website.

Need more sale inspiration? Well, ASOS asked me to curate a gallery of my top 10 sale buys on its Facebook page so click here to see my choices. I've tried to select pieces that will see you through into the next season, items that are still available in a wide range of sizes and that are great bargains, so let me know if you like what I've picked, either here or on my ASOS gallery – or both. It's always nice to hear your thoughts.

What I wore to work

I've got a bit of a backlog of blog posts to catch up on so, first up, what I wore to work last week:

Topshop Unique top – I got this a few years ago but only rediscovered it recently. I'm glad I did as I'm loving the pale blush colour
Gap shorts – silky and cool, these are the perfect summer work shorts
Marks & Spencer Autograph range wedge sandals
ASOS necklace
Vintage bag – I borrowed this from my friend Em, who sources the most amazing vintage finds. She's got a shop on Etsy called Vintage Mardle and I think this bag might just be winging its way into the store later this week. If it, or anything else she's selling, takes your fancy, get a 15% discount by mentioning me – or, rather, using the code BFDISCOUNT. It's valid until midnight on 23rd August.

Meanwhile, see what other people have been wearing to work on the What ELLE Wears blog at

Bargainista Fashionista is in Elle!

Have you seen the September issue of Elle yet? I'm so excited as I'm in it! I've been shot by Elle fashion photographer Andrew Woffinden wearing a dress that's top of my autumn/winter wish list.

As my colleagues listed off their designer desires, I had suddenly felt a bit foolish for choosing a high-street hero. But being Bargainista Fashionista, I had to stay true to my roots and, when the dress arrived in the office, I'm glad I stuck to my guns.

It's an elegant tea dress from New Look that works next season's 1940s look perfectly, giving a ladylike nod to Miuccia Prada's exquisite print dresses for Miu Miu's a/w collection.

I love the bird print, embellished with tiny gold sequins, and the sexy cut-out back detail. Now, if only I'd been able to keep it! Still, it's a steal at £24.99, so I'll be heading to New Look the minute it goes on sale. As to when that is, I'll keep you posted.

See what the rest of the Elle team have on their a/w wish lists in this month's issue of Elle, with Kirsten Dunst on the cover. I think you'll love accessories editor Donna Wallace's choice of a Whistles trouser suit as much as I do.

What I wore to work

What to wear during a scorching hot week in the capital? Well, yesterday I kept cool in the following outfit:

Banana Republic cardie – I love the bright pop of colour and the crochet buttons on this past-season buy
Zara dress – another past-season buy that's still going strong!
Deena & Ozzy sandals from Urban Outfitters – my new 'nana' sandals were £19.99 in the sale, reduced from £38
H&M sunglasses
ASOS bag
