Back to black

PHOTOGRAPHS BY STEPHANIE SIAN SMITH

Right now, it's the perfect weather for capes: cool enough to require a lightweight jacket, but not yet chilly enough to demand a full-on winter coat. I'm making the most of this window of opportunity and wearing one of my wardrobe's key pieces as much as possible.

The latest addition to my cape collection (click here and here to see my other favourites) is this leather-trimmed one by 2nd Day, which I chose as part of my high-street edit for ELLE's October Style for Less supplement. I love the clean lines and simple-yet-striking design.

When wearing a cape, you have to balance your silhouette – the cape's triangular shape demands a slimline bottom half – so I've kept the rest of my outfit relatively plain with a LBD that matches the length of the cape and pointelle tights (£6.99 from H&M).

This all-black ensemble offsets my Michael Kors rose-gold watch perfectly, too. Sometimes, you just can't beat the magic of black.

So, this is what I wore to work today:
2nd Day cape
Uniqlo cardigan
Zara dress
H&M tights
Marks & Spencer shoes
Michael Kors watch

  2. Ok, I have to say I'm very jealous- I love capes but could sadly never pull one off.

It looks fabulous on you though, I can't tell because of the distance what print your tights are, but they look pretty damn funky too!

  3. Emily, welcome to the world of Bargainista Fashionista. Glad you like the blog. I hope you keep reading :)

Natalie, give a cape a go – I think you'd be surprised. There are so many different styles around so choose a length that you're happy with first and go from there. A cape instantly makes my look far more groomed and glamorous so it's been a worthwhile investment. As for the tights, there's load of these pointelle styles around. They're a little bit old-school and twee, but I love them.
